What are the groups' motivations for doing this?

We are a non-profit motivated group of hobbyists. We all share a love for the work of Tolkien and like so many others, want to explore 'the road not taken'- those paths not travelled by Tolkien's characters in the books.

What do you intend to do with the DEM once it's completed?

We will make it freely available to registered users. There will never be a charge involved in registration. There are many uses the model could be put to, from illustrative landscape renders and films, through interactive maps such as Google Earth and World Wind, to virtual reality enviroments such as game engines.

I am not really interested in map making but have other skills such as 3D modelling. Can I help?

Yes, certainly! We hope that such assets can be built in tandem with the terrain. For instance, these assets could be used in the many presentations we as a group hope to make along the way.

I enjoy drawing maps and I think I could contribute, would this help?

Yes, we are looking for members who have skills/interests in this area. Topographical maps are fundamental to our work process and we still have areas to detail.

Can I help build the terrain?

Yes, with one qualification. Because of the work process we have, phase 2 will probably require the use of terrain editing software capable of supporting an image texture overlay such as 'Leveller' and 'Wilbur'.See the link for a more complete list
